CHOOSING YOUR ROUTE

Straight into a degree or via a foundation.

Most art and design courses assess your creative work as well as your grades.

DEGREE ENTRY

Bachelor's and Master's

Apply directly to a design or fine art degree with your academic record and a portfolio.

  • Bachelor's: typically 3 to 4 years (BA, BDes, BFA)
  • Master's: typically 1 to 3 years (MA, MDes, MFA), depending on country
  • A portfolio and statement of purpose are commonly asked for
  • Some courses add an interview or a design task
BUILDING A PORTFOLIO

Foundation and pathway courses

If your portfolio needs work or you are changing subject, a foundation or pathway course can prepare you.

  • Common in the UK and some other destinations
  • Helps you explore disciplines before choosing one
  • Includes portfolio development and mentoring
  • We confirm which routes each university accepts

ARTS & DESIGN QUESTIONS

Common questions, answered directly.

What students ask us most about studying arts and design.

Ask a counsellor →
Do I need a portfolio to apply?

For most art and design courses, yes. Requirements vary by university and course, so we check the current guidance for each school on your shortlist.

Can I apply if I have no art background?

Often yes, especially through a foundation or pathway course that helps you build a portfolio. Routes differ by country, and we confirm the right one for you.

What is the difference between a BA, BDes and BFA?

All are bachelor's degrees. Names vary by country and school, and often reflect a focus on design practice (BDes), fine art (BFA) or a broader arts degree (BA). The content matters more than the title.

Is a master's degree necessary?

Not always. A master's can help you specialise, build a stronger portfolio or move into teaching or research, but many creative careers start from a bachelor's degree and a strong portfolio.

Can I work after finishing my course?

Most of our destinations offer a post-study work visa for eligible graduates. Rules and durations change, so we confirm the current position before you apply.
